AustralianStakes Rating Scale
Every rating you see on AustralianStakes has been calculated during our testing process. Above all, our primary goal is transparency, which is why we share with you our rating criteria, so you know exactly what each score means:
We Start With Research
The review process starts long before we even register an account. Obviously, we start by checking whether a casino is available to Australians. After we confirm its eligibility, we proceed with the first check-up. We want to know exactly who we’re dealing with, so at this stage, we look into things like:
- Licensing & Regulation: Is the casino licensed, and is the regulator reputable? Can we find the license number in the body’s registry?
- Operating Company: Who’s behind the casino, and do they have a good track record?
- Years in Business: Is it a brand-new casino, or has it been operating successfully for years?
- Industry Reputation: What are other players saying, and are there any recurring complaints?
- Security: Does the site use modern encryption to protect player data and payments?
- Terms & Policies: Are there any obvious red flags in the casino’s policies?
We don’t expect all sites to be perfect, but if we spot enough warning signs at this stage, we lower expectations for that particular casino.
How We Rank Australian Online Casinos
Now, let’s get to the real deal: How exactly do we rank Australian online casinos? Well, to say that we look at multiple factors would be an understatement. We check everything, and when I say everything, I literally mean EVERYTHING.
Every review is built around weeks of testing, research, and plenty of note-taking. We check every little detail of every single page at the casino, including every line of the T&Cs, to make sure we don’t skip any detail.
AustralianStakes Wants You To Know: We test everything manually, and we don’t take any chances. We deposit at least A$300 at each site, claim the welcome bonus and a couple of reload promotions, play for a few days up to two weeks, request withdrawals using different payment methods and measure the payout time.
Safety & Trustworthiness
This category carries more weight than any other because nothing else matters if a casino isn’t trustworthy.
Our research is more of an investigation than a review at this point, and it starts with the licence. We verify that the casino has one and that it’s valid, then we check the licence number in the regulator’s official register, and confirm that it belongs to the company operating the casino.
Next, we investigate the operator itself. We look at how long the company has been in business, whether it owns other casinos, and if it has a history of regulatory action or player disputes. We also check other sources where players share their personal experiences, like groups and forums. The idea is to catch a glimpse of how players feel about the casino.
We also consider the software providers the casino works with, as partnerships with established names like Pragmatic Play, BGaming, and Playtech are usually a positive sign.
A Fan Fact: We don’t begin with five stars and look for reasons to deduct points. Instead, every casino has to earn its rating through our testing process. Every positive finding adds to its score, while every concern or red flag limits how high that score can go. We think this approach produces far more realistic ratings.
Registration & Player Experience
This is probably one of the hardest categories to score because player experience is, to some extent, subjective, so we do our best to keep our testing as objective as possible. A member of our team creates an account and deposits A$300 using one of the available payment methods. From that moment on, the real testing begins.
We judge the casino from a player’s perspective. Is registration straightforward? Is the website easy to navigate? Are the games well organised? Can we find important pages without digging through endless menus? Is everything transparent, or are key details hidden away?
These are all small details that might not seem as important on their own, but together, they shape the overall player experience.
Bonuses & Promotions
This is probably our team’s favourite part of the review: the bonus testing. It’s also where we find some of the most creative and, at times, most deceptive terms and conditions. That’s why we spend so much time reading the bonus terms and all the details.
We start by claiming the welcome bonus and, whenever possible, every part of it. We then play through the promotion ourselves to see how it works in practice.
Along the way, we check everything that could affect your chances of turning the bonus into real money, including the wagering requirements, eligible games, game contribution, maximum bet limits, expiry dates, withdrawal restrictions, and any other conditions that deserve your attention.
Games & Software
Actually, this is our favourite part of every review, and probably the one we spend the most time on.
Whenever we test a casino, we dedicate hours to its game library. We usually play between 80 and 100 pokies to get a feel for the overall quality, while Alex happily spends another couple of hours (or 12) testing table games like blackjack and baccarat.
The sheer number of games is important, but so is diversity. We explore every part of the lobby, including pokies, live dealer games, RNG table games, video poker, and any other categories available. Along the way, we evaluate the quality of the software providers, game variety, betting ranges, loading speeds, filters, search functionality, and ease of discovering new games.
Banking
We already mentioned that we deposit A$300 at every casino, but that’s only the beginning.
First, we evaluate the available payment methods, minimum deposit limits, processing times, and whether the casino supports the banking options Australians actually use, such as PayID, cards, Apple Pay, and other popular methods.
Next comes the withdrawal test. We complete the required verification process, measure how long it takes to get our account approved, and track the withdrawal from the moment we submit the request until the funds reach our account.
And yes, sometimes we lose the initial A$300 before we get the chance to withdraw. When that happens, we simply deposit again. The team doesn’t publish a review until we’ve tested the withdrawal process ourselves.
Mobile Experience
Most gamblers play on their phones now, so mobile performance plays a big role in our rankings. Every casino is tested on iOS and Android.
We’re looking for a fast, responsive, and easy-to-use interface. Games should load quickly, menus should be easy to navigate, and the cashier should work just as smoothly as it does on desktop.
We always prefer casinos with a dedicated mobile app, but the reality is that very few Australian online casinos offer one. As long as the browser version delivers an excellent experience, we don’t see the lack of an app as a major drawback.
Customer Support
We test every support channel the casino offers, whether that’s live chat, email, or phone support, and score each one against our own criteria.
For example, waiting up to 10 minutes for a live chat agent is acceptable in our books, but waiting 20 minutes or more isn’t. The same goes for email support. A response within 24 hours is reasonable, while waiting 48 hours or longer starts costing the casino points.
Response times are only part of the equation, though. We also judge the quality of the support. Are our questions answered accurately? Does the agent actually understand the issue? Are the replies helpful, or are they just copied from a script? All of these factors contribute to the final score.
How We Get Our Final Rating
By the time we reach this stage, we’ve spent days testing every aspect of the casino. We’ve researched the operator, deposited real money, claimed bonuses, tested the games, contacted customer support, and completed at least one withdrawal.
Now it’s time to assign a score. We’ve developed a more complex system in which some areas carry more weight than others, and we value hands-on experience over sheer numbers.
For example, we’d happily recommend a casino with 2,000 games if it’s safe, pays players quickly, and offers a great overall experience. And we wouldn’t recommend a casino with 10,000+ games if it’s untrustworthy or we deem it unsafe.
When deciding on the final rating, we ask ourselves questions like:
- Would we genuinely recommend this casino to a friend or family member? – If the answer is yes, then the operator makes our top list.
- Did the casino deliver on everything it promised? – If yes, then it’s a strong indicator that it’s a trustworthy brand.
- Were there any red flags during our testing? – Red flags like transparent terms or delayed withdrawals usually mean, in soccer slang, a direct red card.
- How did it compare to other Australian casinos we’ve reviewed? – Were the T&Cs fairer than other casinos? Was the bonus bigger? All of these factors determine whether a casino will get a higher score.
- Did anything surprise us, either positively or negatively? – Unexpected positives earn extra points, while unpleasant surprises usually cost the casino points.
- Would we personally play there again? – If the answer is no, the casino simply doesn’t deserve one of our top ratings.
